Page 1 of 4 Foreword Vietnamese as a Second Language 1 (VSL1), a Language Program for Foreiners, is the fist book in a series of 6 that has been compiled and edited by a group of lecturers from the faculty of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language Program for Foreiners, of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City. It is estimated that this book (VSL1) can be mastered in about 150 class hours. Vietnamese as a Second Language 1 (VSL1) includes two main section as follows: PRONUNCIATION: in this section,each element, of pronunciation in the Vietnamese language (consonant, vowels and tones) are arranged in a suitable order: from easy to the more difficult. This helps the learner to practice the pronunciation of Vietnamese is an easy way without causing boredom in either the teacher or learner. After studying this section for 15 or 20 hours with the help of a teacher, the student will have a firm grasp of Vietnamese pronunciation and in particular tones and intonation. LESSON: This section includes 12 lessons and introduces a number of model sentences, a number of written Vietnamese grammar points and about 500 words. The subjects matter relates to common everyday topics that a person beginning Vietnamese language study will need to know, such as: greeting,speaking about nationality, profession, address,etc.After every five lessons there one review lesson. Lesson 6 and lesson 12 aim to help the student by reinforcing the structures and skills that he or she has learned. The goal of every lesson is to show th learner how to speak Vietnamese in a way that is completely natural. With lively dialogues that are related to real life, picture that illustrate the contents of each lesson, an abundance of exercises of various forms, precise and succinct notes, all prepared in the spirit of modern language teaching techniques, VSL1 is laid out in a suitable style and easy to understand. We hope that VSL1 will provide a useful tool for both the learner and the instructor. In the process of editing and preparing this book, We have received enthusiastic help and contributions of our colleagues and students of the Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese Language for Foreiners Faculty.
