1. INTRODUCTION

In recent years, as Vietnam rapidly integrates into the regional and global community, Vietnam and Vietnamese language in particular are increasingly drawing attention from the international community. Vietnamese language is being taught as a foreign language in a markedly rising number of universities and institutions inside as well as outside Vietnam. Additionally, students of Vietnamese as a foreign language is steadily growing in number and remarkably diversifying as well, both in terms of occupational structure and levels of study. A great number of graduate students and Ph.D students with a research interest in Vietnam are also pursuing long – term Vietnamese language courses.

In response to the growing need for teaching and learning of Vietnamese language in the international scale, international research cooperation in teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language should be particularly emphasized and promoted.

2. THE ORGANIZER AND STEERING COMMITTEE

Organizer: Faculty of Vietnamese studies – University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University - Hochiminh city

Faculty of Vietnamese studies (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hochiminh city) has been the largest institution for teaching Vietnamese language and Vietnames studies in Vietnam. Currently the number of foreign students has reached 700, while our faculty staff include as many as 50 full-time and contract instructors. This conference is also held in year 2008 marking the 10th anniversary of establishment of Faculty of Vietnamese studies, formerly known as the Center for Vietnamese and Southeast Asian studies.

3. OBJECTIVES AND AGENDA

Conference objectives

The 1st International Conference of Teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language – VNSC 1 aims to bring together teachers and researchers involved in teaching  Vietnamese as a foreign language for the purpose of exchanging ideas and consolidating teaching experience, thus identifying future directions for research and development. Moreover, this conference is also intended to become a venue where those involved in teaching Vietnamese may expand one’s network, as a solid step towards establishment of the Association of Vietnamese teaching teachers.

Agenda

The general themes of the conference are as follows:

  1. Theoretical issues: comparative research on characteristics of the Vietnamese language as a foreign language ( in terms of phonetics, vocabulary, grammar etc...) in comparison with other languages.
  1. Practical issues: methodology and experience in teaching Listening – Speaking – Reading – Writing skills to foreigners or to overseas Vietnamese; Vietnamese language textbooks and teaching materials, testing and evaluation of Vietnamese proficiency.

In addition, we also welcome papers on the following themes:

  • History of Vietnamese studies and the present status of teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language in countries outside Vietnam where Vietnamese studies and Vietnamese language are being taught.
  • The possibilities for international exchange and cooperation between universities and institutions for the common objective of further development of teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language.
